About the role
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Advocacy Officer to help shape and deliver advocacy initiatives that support the veterinary profession. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment, enjoys building relationships, and can translate complex issues into clear and compelling communications.
This diverse role combines policy development, stakeholder engagement, committee governance and communications. Working closely with members, government, industry stakeholders and internal teams, you will develop evidence-based policy positions, coordinate advocacy campaigns, prepare submissions, and communicate advocacy outcomes that drive meaningful change.
While the AVA national office is based in St Leonards, Sydney, we are open to considering exceptional candidates located elsewhere in Australia, with remote working arrangements available.
Participation in Member and Committee meetings outside standard business hours will be required from time to time.
Key responsibilities
Advocacy & Policy
- Develop and coordinate strategic advocacy campaigns and initiatives.
- Prepare submissions, briefing papers and policy responses.
- Monitor legislative, regulatory and industry developments impacting the profession.
- Identify emerging issues and develop evidence-based policy positions.
Stakeholder Engagement & Governance
- Build and maintain relationships with government, industry and professional stakeholders.
- Represent the AVA at meetings, forums and consultations.
- Provide governance and secretariat support to committees and working groups.
- Support the delivery of divisional advocacy plans and member engagement activities.
Communications
- Prepare advocacy communications including reports, articles, media releases, website and social media content.
- Communicate policy developments and advocacy outcomes to members and stakeholders.
- Respond to member and stakeholder enquiries.

Requirements
About You
You will bring:
- A tertiary qualification in a relevant field, or equivalent experience
- Demonstrated experience in advocacy, policy, public affairs or stakeholder engagement.
- Strong research, analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience supporting committees, governance processes or stakeholder groups.
- The ability to manage multiple priorities and competing deadlines.

- Proven ability to develop high-quality reports, submissions, and presentations
- Strong interpersonal and influencing skills, with a collaborative approach
