Company History
The Consumer Brands Association's beginnings reach back as far as 1908. The American Specialty Manufacturers Association was created when 60 manufacturers representing 45 of the most respected food and branded product manufacturers met in New York City to discuss ways to bring their fledging industry in accordance with new laws and to build better industry relations. The association and its members played a pivotal role in a number of landmark events for the consumer packaged goods industry including producing food during both World Wars, advocating for legislation that formed the FDA, developing the bar code, and developing SmartLabel, a digital disclosure tool that gives consumers a way to access more detailed product information that can fit on a label. Building on and learning from the best of tis past, the association started a new chapter in its 112-year-old history by becoming the Consumer Brands Association, adapting a proactive agenda that aligns with the values of the brands it represents and the consumers they serve.
