Company History
AHIMA was established upon the urging of the American College of Surgeons in the 1920s to facilitate the standard collection of patient data to support the measurement and management of quality outcomes. From this beginning, AHIMA has become the sole force behind accrediting education programs in health information management (HIM), credentialing individual practitioners in skills and knowledge areas critical to effective health information management, and encouraging the strategic evolution of HIM as a discipline and a profession. AHIMA is also playing an increasingly critical role in shaping the nation’s health policy. In addition to AHIMA’s U.S. membership of more than 61,000 individuals, AHIMA is a founding member of the International Federation of Health Record Organizations with over 20 member countries.
