Description

Principal Solicitor (Full Time, Fixed Term - Up to 12 months)

The Office of Public Prosecutions (OPP) has an exciting opportunity for a Principal Solicitor within our Trial Divisions. The position of Principal Solicitor, within the Trial Division has a primary responsibility for the preparation and conduct of the most highly complex matters in all jurisdictions - Magistrates' Court, County and Supreme Courts.

About the Role:

  • Prepare and instruct in the most highly complex matters, including major trials and taskforce investigations, and appear when required.
  • Strong negotiation skills, with an agile approach toward management of workloads that identifies and pursues opportunities for the effective resolution of matters in line with the DPP policy and OPP goals and values.
  • Initiate policy review/development, identification of issues and trends and resolution of problems in the prosecution of the most highly complex criminal cases

As our ideal candidate you will have:

  • Extensive working knowledge of Criminal Law and Procedure, Evidence Law and other relevant legislation, with considerable knowledge of, and practising experience in highly complex cases
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively identify and respond to emerging issues at both a strategic and operational level in a changing legal environment
  • Demonstrated ability to formally and effectively mentor staff and to foster continuous learning and development and aid in their professional development
