Job Description: Interns are paired with a fiscal and policy analyst to work on a specific and practical issue facing the state of California. Intern projects are determined based on the needs of the office, student interests, skills, and academic background.
Interns will participate in a professional development and training program conducted by seasoned LAO staff. There will also be ample opportunities to network with interns from other state budget and policy agencies.
Location: In-person in Sacramento, California. In-office work Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Telecommuting offered most Mondays and Fridays, workload permitting.
LAO Summary: The primary activities of the LAO are to:
Assist the Legislature in all aspects of the budget process through its analytical and oversight activities.
Respond to legislative requests for information about and analysis of the state’s budget and programs.
Conduct independent studies and produce self-generated reports on topics of importance to the state.
The LAO deals with real-world problems that directly affect the public and assists the Legislature in setting budget priorities and state policy for one of the world’s largest economies. Working independently as well as in teams, the LAO serves as the eyes and ears of the California Legislature to ensure that state-funded programs are operating in an efficient and effective manner.

The LAO internship is a full-time, paid, 12-week program. It is a rigorous analytical experience open to individuals who:
Have completed one year of a graduate program that includes curriculum that is both quantitative and policy based.
Are interested in becoming a full-time fiscal and policy analyst at the LAO after graduation.
