Description

The Executive Director, reporting to the Executive Board through the President, serves as the principal executive of AALL and provides visionary leadership and strategic direction to advance the Association’s mission. This role is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of AALL’s headquarters and ensuring the effective implementation of its programs, policies, and initiatives.

Key responsibilities include leading strategic planning, managing organizational finances, ensuring compliance with legal and policy standards, and supporting the governance work of the Executive Board. The Executive Director also plays a critical role in member engagement, organizational development, and external representation of the Association.

Working in close partnership with the Executive Board, President, and President-Elect, the Executive Director facilitates effective leadership and decision-making. They manage a dedicated staff team and oversee core functions such as committee and chapter support, member services, the annual meeting, continuing education initiatives, and advancement of AALL’s public policy agenda.

AALL currently operates on a hybrid schedule based in the Chicago, Illinois headquarters.

RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Strategic Planning & Implementation

• Partners with the Executive Board to develop, implement, and evaluate short- and long-term strategic plans that advance the organization’s mission and sustainability.
• Ensures all programs, services, and initiatives, including those involving technology and digital engagement, align with strategic priorities and respond to the evolving needs of members.
• Leads efforts to integrate technology, digital strategy, and innovation across operations, communications, member services, and programming to enhance effectiveness, access, and impact.
• Oversees policy review and updates, ensuring governance and operational policies remain current, inclusive, and aligned with AALL strategic priorities and best practices.
• Coordinates staff support for committees and working groups to ensure their activities reflect AALL’s mission, values, and strategic goals.

2. Financial Planning, Budgeting, & Fundraising

• Ensures budget adherence, evaluates program value relative to costs, and ensures alignment with approved financial guidelines.
• Manages fundraising strategy and execution, maintains donor records, and ensures compliance with financial procedures.
• Works with the Director of Finance to assist the Treasurer and the Finance & Budget Committee in drafting financial policies, preparing the annual budget, and presenting financial reports and projections to the Executive Board.
• Ensures the accurate and timely maintenance of financial records, including audits, internal controls, trend analysis, and compliance with applicable financial standards and procedures.

3. Executive Board & Leadership Governance & Support

• Serves as the primary liaison to the Executive Board, ensuring timely communication, policy implementation, and execution of Board decisions.
• Aligns Association activities with strategic priorities and long-term goals.
  Plans and facilitates Board meetings, retreats, new board member orientation, and leadership transitions.
• Works in close partnership with the President and President-Elect to provide strategic and logistical support throughout the leadership cycle and in preparation for the annual meeting.
• Oversees the annual election process in collaboration with the Secretary, ensuring compliance with bylaws and deadlines.
• Brings a record of success working with volunteer governing boards and navigating annual leadership transitions with consistency and adaptability.
• Communicates with clarity, empathy, and responsiveness across a variety of audiences and settings.
• Champions diversity, equity, and inclusion through meaningful engagement, decision-making, and institutional leadership.

4. Headquarters Management & Team Development

• Provides strategic leadership and oversight for all staff, ensuring effective team management, accountability, and alignment with the organization’s goals.
• Fosters an inclusive, respectful, and collaborative workplace culture grounded in the organization’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
• Oversees all aspects of staff management, including recruitment, onboarding, supervision, performance evaluation, professional development, and performance management, ensuring compliance with all applicable employment laws and best practices.
• Invests in staff development by identifying growth opportunities and supporting continuous learning across all roles.
• Strengthens internal operations by reviewing and improving workflows, communication, and team structures to enhance efficiency and impact.
• Serves as the primary liaison to the President and Executive Board on staffing, organizational culture, and operational capacity, offering regular updates and strategic guidance.

5. Member Relations & Internal Communications

• Oversees the development, delivery, and regular evaluation of member-facing programs and services, including continuing education and chapter support, and the work of AALL’s 14 special interest sections (SISs), ensuring they are well-supported and aligned with member needs.
• Leads the planning and execution of all aspects of the annual meeting, ensures clear documentation and communication, and addresses issues as they arise. Works closely with the President and the Board as needed.
• Maintains respectful, proactive and supportive relationships with members and volunteers.
• Communicates organizational updates through various channels and ensures that AALL’s platforms are current and accurate.

6. External Relations & Communications

• Represents AALL in partnerships and public policy discussions; builds strategic alliances; and reports to the Board on key developments in the legal and information professions.
• Monitors legislative, regulatory, and public policy developments potentially impacting the profession. Advocates for AALL’s public policy positions.
• Monitors developments in federal legislation, regulation, and other relevant areas, and ensures AALL maintains an active, visible presence in policy discussions.
• Works collaboratively with external stakeholders, including public officials, the media, and community and business leaders.

QUALIFICATIONS

Requirements:

• Bachelor’s Degree;
• A minimum of 5 – 7 years of leadership experience in a member-driven association or organization of similar size and complexity;
• Strong staff leadership skills: ability to motivate, delegate, and support team growth;
• Skilled in strategic planning and governance support; comfortable working closely with a Board of Directors;
• Financial acumen; proven ability to oversee budgets, manage resources effectively, negotiate contracts, and ensure financial stability;
• Politically skilled with the ability to navigate diverse stakeholder interests;
• Approachable and collaborative; willing to connect meaningfully with members;
• Strong alignment with the values and practices of law librarianship; stays informed about current trends and is committed to ongoing engagement with the profession;
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills;
• Cultural competence and sensitivity to diversity and inclusion.

Preferred:

• Advanced degree and/or relevant certifications;
• Experience working in law libraries or related library or legal settings considered a plus.

This is a hybrid role that requires regular in-person presence in the Chicago, Illinois headquarters. Domestic travel required.
