- Senior Manager, Organizing - DMV Region
Description
We are looking for a relational and strategic Senior Manager, Organizing to join our Campaigns & Organizing department as we build a stronger, more unified, and effective organizing program across our organization.
This is an exciting opportunity to use your expertise in movement and power-building to provide direct coaching, develop resources, and evaluate our organizing work, acting as a force multiplier as we build power in the Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia (DMV) region, with a key focus on campaigns and base-building within DC.
This is a full-time role reporting to the Senior Director, Organizing; this role is based in Washington, D.C., Maryland, or Virginia and will require frequent travel in the DMV region. We hope our new Senior Manager, Organizing will start in early March.
Responsibilities
Lead work to build people-power across the organization
- Recruit, train, and sustain a diverse base of volunteers and members, and develop their capacity for independent leadership and action
- Proactively build and maintain relationships with a wide range of stakeholders, including community leaders, partners, policymakers, and others
- Represent Common Cause in coalition spaces, including leading coalitions
- Develop strategic plans to leverage existing organizing strengths and tactics, and implement new approaches that support a focus on collective, in-person organizing
- Lead key components of the national organizing strategy, including leadership development, base-building and relational organizing, partnerships and coalitions, strategic actions, and program evaluation
- Provide guidance and informal mentorship to interns, volunteers, and team members, coordinating their work to support team goals
Lead our strategic efforts to build our presence in the DMV region
- Develop and implement a plan to build our grassroots organizing presence in the DMV region
- Analyze trends and metrics to measure the impact of our grassroots organizing work in the DMV region
- Build and maintain strategic relationships with coalitions and other partners in the DMV region
- Provide customized support plans, coaching, and technical assistance to state teams and organizers
- Create support plans that can be scaled across teams
- Develop an organizing curricula (including toolkits and resources) to be used across our organization
- Develop and facilitate peer learning and collaboration across states, making judgments on best practices and knowledge-sharing opportunities
- Other duties as assigned
Requirements

- Familiarity with office productivity tools including Microsoft Office, Slack, and Zoom
- The following is required:
- Experience leading successful grassroots organizing and base-building efforts and campaigns at the state level and in DC
- Experience establishing and managing coalitions or groups that represent stakeholders with diverse interests to achieve a goal
- Demonstrated knowledge of the unique aspects of the political dynamic and key decision-makers within the DMV region and specifically of DC, with existing relationships with these people and organizations
- Demonstrated ability to lead and facilitate effective trainings, and to coach organizers to improve their skills and impact, both in-person and virtually
- A track record of leading organization-wide change initiatives
- Demonstrated understanding of the legislative process within Washington, DC (ideally also in Maryland, and/or Virginia)
- Have managed at least one staff member, intern and/or Fellow
- Ideally you have worked in an organization that operates across multiple states or regions
- Ability to travel around Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia up to 40% of the time, as well as occasional travel to other parts of the country (especially during legislative cycles)
- Ability to work in-person in our DC office up to five times per month
- Willing to have a social media presence on behalf of Common Cause, including being tagged on posts and creating content on behalf of the organization (as needed, Common Cause may provide accounts for staff members to use)
- Per our nonpartisan policy, Common Cause staff members may not currently be in elected office (or running for office); on the Steering Committee or Finance Committee for any political candidate; or affiliated with the leadership of a political party
