Description
Job Responsibilities- Collaborate with the news director and news managers to choose stories to broadcast considering audience preferences.
- Cover wide range of news stories, including breaking news. Learn community and develop and pitch story ideas and turn content. Present live scripted and unscripted news reports; may present live stories from the scene of the news, the newsroom and/or studio or may tape stories for later broadcast.
- Hours will primarily include weekend evenings for anchoring and then performing reporting and shooting video footage three days a week. Shift can change to meet the needs of the station.
- Shoot steady, sequenced video with good, clean audio for news, weather and sports for daily newscasts, specials and social media under tight deadlines and for multiple shows.
- Edit video satisfactorily for news stories such as vos, vo/sots, setups and reporter pacs using different techniques and different editing machines under tight deadlines. Editing may be done at the station or remote location.
- Attend daily news editorial meetings with reporters and other news anchors to be briefed on the day's news.
- Write, revise and prepare scripts to deliver them on-air.
- Organize the news to present the most interesting pieces first, ensure late-breaking news is added to newscasts.
- Constructs and plans assigned newscast by organizing, writing, selecting, and making creative decisions for assigned live newscast, using criteria established by management. Makes decisions about stories to be included, how long they should be, the form of the story (i.e. voice over, live remote, reporter package, etc.), and in what order they should run. Writes and rewrites stories as needed. Plans for contingencies.
- Introduce news reporters live on scene and ask relevant questions.
- Interview guests and other members involved in particular stories engaging in commentary.
- Maintain extensive community contacts and awareness of local, state and national current events.
- Keep abreast of news developments by studying papers, attending events, and staying in contact with industry professionals.
- Write for station's website and maintain an active social media presence.
- Able to represent the station at promotional appearances and community events.
- Provide newsroom leadership and contribute to overall team effort.
- Act in a professional manner when representing the station.
- Comply with the moral code of the journalistic profession.
- Report to work on time and work established schedule/hours. Ability to work other hours or alternate schedules as needed or assigned by News management. Regular, predictable on-time attendance is an essential function of the job.
- Complete other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- A college degree in journalism, television or communications or equivalent experience; solid journalism background with 2 years' experience in an anchor role preferred.
- Some experience producing a local television newscast preferred.
- Quick and effective decision-making, live ad-libbing and maintaining performance under extreme pressure.
- Highly developed public speaking and interpersonal skills along with exceptional communication skills, both oral and written.
- Professional, consistent on-air appearance and ability to read Teleprompter.
- Advanced abilities in critical thinking.
- Broad knowledge of local, national and international affairs (e.g. political, economic, legislative and cultural).
- Comfortable yet professional presence on camera with the ability to improvise in a live on-camera setting.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Available to work on a flexible schedule. The position needs to be available any and all shifts including overnights, early mornings, late evenings, weekends and holidays.
- Ability to work under stressful conditions and strict deadlines.
- Maintain appropriate and strict standards regarding wardrobe, hair, cosmetics and grooming.
- Ability to lift and carry equipment up to 50 lbs. The Company may make reasonable accommodations to facilitate the ability to perform essential job functions.
- Must have a valid New York State driver's license or apply for one within 30 days of relocating to Rochester, New York, consistent with NYS motor vehicle law. You must also have a safe driving history as determined by the Company. Driving record will be checked before hire and annually.
