Description
The Policy Intern is responsible for the execution of strategies focused on growing Oklahoma Center for Nonprofits’
(the Center’s) advocacy efforts at the local, state and federal levels. The Policy Intern will report to the VP of External
Affairs and actively support the Center’s policy platform through various written, verbal and organizational measures
to further the organization’s advocacy goals. Activities may include but not limited to supporting policy committee
meetings; hosting roundtable discussions and other advocacy-related events for the nonprofit sector; creating and
disseminating written, verbal and digital education materials to legislators, nonprofits and various other stakeholders;
monitoring news and more.
This internship will have the benefit of working in real-time on real issues affecting Oklahoma’s nonprofit sector, the
state’s third-largest non-government employer. This position offers opportunities for learning the legislative process,
taking an active part in advocacy efforts and potential for visiting the State Capitol and interacting with elected
officials. As an active member of the External Affairs team, the intern will have the opportunity for exposure to related
activities within strategic communications and marketing realms as well as have the opportunity to work with
individuals in departments across the organization, as needs dictate.
Requirements
Advocacy Support
- Contribute to strategy and implementation on policy-related topics.
- Develop written materials such as one-pagers, talking points and FAQ documents and more to support
advocacy work. - Complete secondary research on assigned topics and report findings accordingly.
- Interact in-person, by phone and in-writing with partners, members and other stakeholders.
- Monitor issues, legislation and media coverage of assigned topics.
- Assist with scheduling and other logistical planning. `
- Attend meetings and/or deliver materials to the State Capitol or other destinations, as needed.
Education and Events
- Help coordinate annual Nonprofit Day at the Capitol.
- Help coordinate annual legislative reception.
- Provide support for policy committee meetings and activities.
- Provide support for virtual advocacy roundtables serving nonprofit leaders.
- Provide support for advocacy-related training events.
- Assist with any “all hands on deck” events and initiatives, as needed.
Other Functions
- Other duties may be assigned by the VP-External Affairs.
- Contribute to the growing, diverse culture at OKCNP and work alongside staff to problem-solve, strategize,
create goals, monitor progress, and build relationships. - Carry out tasks independently and as part of a highly collaborative team, balancing autonomy and team integration.
- Organize, prioritize, and complete multiple projects in a detail-oriented manner.
- Manage deadlines and communicate progress to team members.
- Ability to travel throughout the state and outside of Oklahoma as needed.
- Engage in professional development activities such as training, conferences, research and coaching.
- Participate in OKCNP’s special events.
- Provide general administrative functions such as expense reporting, budget oversight, consultation with
other team members, and attendance at scheduled meetings. - Maintain the strictest of confidentiality at all times.
- Represent OKCNP’s values in working with clients and colleagues.
Education and Expertise
- Actively enrolled, degree-seeking student at an accredited university in Oklahoma.
- All applicants will be given consideration, but individuals pursuing degrees in areas including but
not limited to political science, pre-law, journalism, English and related majors may find their
education most applicable to this role.

- Exceptional communication skills (verbal, written, presentation); knowledge of grammar, spelling and
punctuation rules required. - Proficient in Microsoft Office products.
- Ability to work independently and within a team environment.
Reports to VP of External Affairs
Availability
- 10-15 hours per week
- January through May (in approximate alignment with Oklahoma’s legislative session)
- Must be available Friday mornings

- OKC HQ office preferred
