Job DescriptionThe University of Maryland (UMB) School of Dentistry (SOD) is seeking a Director of Student Affairs to actively contribute to the strategic direction, implementation, and assessment of the student experience. Serving as a key member of the University of Maryland of School of Dentistry (UMSOD)'s Office of Student Affairs (OSA) leadership team, the Director champions a student-focused environment that celebrates achievement, leadership, wellbeing, and professionalism within the context of a demanding professional curriculum. The Director offers direct guidance and actively manages initiatives and services that foster positive student experience from matriculation through graduation. Primary duties include offering comprehensive advising and support to more than 30 student-led dental organizations and their faculty advisors, creating frameworks, programs, and strategies to foster student participation in extracurricular activities alongside rigorous academic schedules, planning events and programs including initiatives dedicated to global and community engagement, and helping students by providing assistance and referrals to crisis resources. This role reports to the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs and works closely with staff, students, faculty, and campus partners to nurture an engaging and supportive educational community.

Student Leadership and Engagement
- Offer thorough guidance and support to all UMSOD student organizations and their faculty advisors by providing advice on policies, procedures, financial management, and fundraising protocols, as well as fostering professional and leadership growth.
- Advise the UMSOD Student Government Association (SGA), which coordinates class-level elections, community service and engagement recognition, the student spring formal, and other student-led activities.
- Evaluate and approve student requests related to student activities, events, community service initiatives, and lunch and learn programs consistent with policies and procedures.
- Develop, update, and maintain essential resources-including standard operating procedures for the department, student leaders, and faculty advisors-to promote clear communication and ensure compliance across all student organizations.
- Assist the Department's Events Specialist with planning and executing major academic ceremonies such as Graduation, the Senior Awards Program, and the White Coat Ceremony, as well as other events.
- Design, implement, and evaluate the annual Student Club Fair. Collaborate with the OSA staff and other colleagues to plan and implement educational and professional career programming, and other professional development events in collaboration with the American Student Dental Education Association (ASDA) and other student groups, faculty, and educational vendors.
- Coordinate the process to submit student award nominations recognizing outstanding student accomplishments.
- Collaborate with the Assistant Dean to review and update student policies.
Global and Community Engagement
- Oversee and evaluate initiatives that foster global and community engagement among students, while also managing the recruitment process, orientations, and travel arrangements for international programs in accordance with University and partner policies.
- Maintain communication with global partners and support the Assistant Dean in preparing reports and analyses for donors and institutional leadership.
Student Support, Guidance, and Advocacy
- Provide advice and advocacy, maintaining office hours for individualized student support. Deliver prompt, empathetic assistance and work with School and University offices to resolve student issues. Serve as on-call backup for the Assistant Dean.
- Manage student attendance and excused absence requests and facilitate communication with faculty.
- Assist with the Institutional Evaluation Letter process and portals for the post-graduate application process.
- Support student communications, website updates, and administrative tasks as backup to the Program Administrative Specialist.
- Fulfill additional responsibilities as assigned.
Strategic Leadership and Collaboration
- Build partnerships with schools, programs, and University departments to enhance co-curricular and interdisciplinary learning opportunities.
- Maintain strong communication with campus leadership to promote understanding and visibility of departmental initiatives.
- Serve as a back-up for the department at campus meetings, committees, and special projects.
Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor's degree in a related field. Master's degree or additional certification in social work, counseling, student affairs, education administration, or related field can be substituted for two years of experience. Juris Doctorate can be substituted for three years of experience.
Experience: Seven (7) years of progressive experience working with college students.
Supervisory Experience: Four (4) years of work coordination, training, or supervision.
Certification/Licensure: N/A.
Other: Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 undergraduate college credits being equivalent to one year of related experience. In instances where specific education and/or experience is required only directly related education and/or experience may be substituted.

Hiring Range: $99,000 - $110,000, Commensurate with education and experience
